Uzbekistan land borders: crossing with a private car
Uzbek cars do not cross into Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan or Tajikistan on our trips: you change cars at the border. Our Uzbek driver drops you at the crossing, you walk through both posts with your luggage, and a driver from our sister service waits on the other side. One booking, one price for both cars.
Crossings we use
| Crossing | Between | Our route, sedan | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dustlik – Dostuk | Andijan – Osh (Kyrgyzstan) | Tashkent → Osh $280; Fergana or Andijan → Osh $120 | Listed as open around the clock with a short lunch break; crossing usually 45 min – 1.5 h. |
| Kaplanbek (while Gisht Kuprik – Zhibek Zholy is rebuilt) | Tashkent – Shymkent (Kazakhstan) | Tashkent → Shymkent $140 | Main crossing closed for reconstruction since 5 February 2025, reopening expected by the end of 2026 (Kun.uz, 29 September 2026). Sources disagree on Kaplanbek’s hours; we plan daytime crossings. |
| Jartepa – Sarazm | Samarkand – Panjakent (Tajikistan) | Samarkand → Panjakent $90 | Listed as open 24 hours; we confirm the regime before every booking. |
| Oybek | Tashkent – Khujand (Tajikistan) | run by our sister service RideTJ | The main crossing towards Khujand; we confirm hours before booking. |
Border regimes change. We re-check the crossing you will use before confirming, and if the authorities close it on your date you get a free new date or a full refund.
How the handover works
The evening before, you get the names, phones and plates of both drivers. The Uzbek driver takes you to the last point cars may go and shows you the entrance. You pass Uzbek exit control and the other country’s entry control on foot; porters offer to carry bags for a dollar or two. The second driver waits at the exit with a sign with your name. If the queue is long, the second driver waits — the price does not change.
Documents and money
Check the entry rules of the next country for your passport before you go — many nationalities are visa-free in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, but not all, and Tajikistan has an e-visa. Panjakent and the Fann Mountains do not need the GBAO permit. Change some money before the border: rates at the crossings are poor.

Questions
Can an Uzbek car drive into Kyrgyzstan or Tajikistan?
Not on our trips: changing cars at the border is faster and avoids vehicle paperwork and insurance issues. You walk across and the second car is waiting.
How long does the crossing take?
Usually 45 minutes to 1.5 hours at Dustlik–Dostuk; queues at Kaplanbek vary more. We plan daytime crossings where hours are uncertain.
Do I pay two drivers?
No. You pay one price for both cars; the confirmation says which driver collects it.
