Tashkent to Samarkand is about 310 km — 4 to 4.5 hours by private car on the main highway through Syrdarya and Jizzakh. The Afrosiyob high-speed train is faster (about 2 h 10 – 2 h 30) and cheaper per seat, so a car makes sense when the train is sold out, when you travel with family or luggage, or when you want to stop on the way and be dropped at your hotel door.

The road
Four-lane highway most of the way, through the cotton plains of Syrdarya and the town of Jizzakh, then through the Gates of Tamerlane gorge into the Zarafshan valley. Good asphalt; police speed checks are common, our drivers keep to the limits.
Worth stopping
- Gates of Tamerlane — a narrow rocky gorge with inscriptions near Jizzakh, a 10–15 minute photo stop.
- Jizzakh for lunch — the town is known for its samsa.
Good to know
- Afrosiyob economy Tashkent–Samarkand costs 311,000 sum (about $26) per seat since 1 February 2026. For two people the train is cheaper; from three people with luggage a sedan ($110, about $37 each) gets close — see our guide “Afrosiyob sold out?”.
- Pickup from Tashkent airport costs the same as from the city.
