Samarkand to Bukhara is about 280 km — 3.5 to 4 hours by private car through Navoi. The Afrosiyob train covers it in roughly 1.5 hours, but the road has two stops worth making that the train skips: the ruined Rabat-i Malik caravanserai and the ceramic workshops of Gijduvan.

The road
Along the Zarafshan river to Navoi, then west across the Malik steppe to Bukhara. Mostly good asphalt, some single-carriageway sections with trucks.
Worth stopping
- Rabat-i Malik — the portal of an 11th-century royal caravanserai and the Sardoba water cistern opposite, right by the road between Navoi and Bukhara.
- Gijduvan — family ceramic workshops about 45 km before Bukhara; a visit takes 45–60 minutes.
Good to know
- With both stops the day is 5–6 hours door to door — still arriving in Bukhara in daylight if you leave by 10:00.
- Bukhara’s old town is largely pedestrian; the driver takes you to the nearest point and walks you to your hotel.
