Bukhara to Khiva is the longest leg of the classic Silk Road trip: about 455 km across the Kyzylkum desert, 6.5 to 8 hours by private car. There are trains too (including the high-speed Jaloliddin Manguberdi service to Khiva), but they run on few days and sell out; a car leaves from your hotel door when you choose.

The road
North-west out of Bukhara into the Kyzylkum — sand, saxaul scrub and very few villages — then along the Amu Darya for long stretches before entering the Khorezm oasis. The road has been rebuilt in sections; travellers in 2025 found it better than expected but long.
Worth stopping
- Amu Darya viewpoint — the river that was the Oxus of the ancient world.
- Roadside chaikhana for lunch; fuel and toilets are scarce, so we stop where the driver knows it is clean.
Good to know
- Leave by 8:00 to reach Khiva for sunset on the walls of Itchan Kala.
- In summer the desert passes 40 °C — all our cars have working air conditioning and carry water.
- The Khorezm desert fortresses (Ayaz-Kala, Toprak-Kala) are north of Khiva, not on this road; see them as a separate day from Khiva rather than adding hours to this drive.
