The road
Tashkent → Syrdarya plain → Jizzakh → Gates of Tamerlane → Samarkand ring road → Navoi → Malik steppe → Bukhara. Good four-lane highway most of the way, single-carriageway sections with trucks after Navoi.
Worth stopping
- Gates of Tamerlane gorge near Jizzakh.
- Samarkand: a lunch stop, or an hour at the Registan.
- Rabat-i Malik caravanserai portal and the Sardoba cistern.
- Gijduvan ceramic workshops (45–60 min).
Good to know
- Stops of up to 1 hour in total are included; a longer Samarkand visit is better as Tashkent → Samarkand and Samarkand → Bukhara on separate days.
- Leave Tashkent by 8:00 to reach Bukhara in daylight.
- Bukhara old town is largely pedestrian; the driver takes you to the nearest point and walks you to the hotel.
