The road
Over the Takhtakaracha pass to Shahrisabz, then south through Guzar and the Baysun mountains to the Surkhandarya valley and Termez. Mountain sections are slow; the last part is flat and hot.
Worth stopping
- Shahrisabz — Ak-Saray ruins and Kok-Gumbaz mosque (1–2 h).
- Baysun mountains — gorges and villages, a good leg-stretch.
Good to know
- Combine with Shahrisabz and the trip becomes a full day; leave Samarkand by 7:30.
- Termez is next to the Afghan border. The city and its sites are visited by tourists, but read your own government’s travel advice before you go.
- In winter the Takhtakaracha pass can close after snow; then we take the longer lower road and confirm the time the day before.
