The road
Out of Samarkand towards Urgut, up through orchards to the Jartepa checkpoint, then on the Tajik side past the Sarazm excavations into Panjakent.
Worth stopping
- Sarazm — a UNESCO World Heritage proto-urban site from the 4th–3rd millennium BC, right by the road on the Tajik side.
- Ancient Panjakent — the ruins of a Sogdian city with fire temples and fragments of wall paintings, on a terrace above the modern town.
Good to know
- Jartepa is listed as open 24 hours on the Uzbek border-crossing listings we checked; we still confirm the regime before every booking and plan daytime crossings.
- Check Tajikistan’s entry rules for your passport before you go — many travellers use the Tajik e-visa, some nationalities need no visa. Panjakent and the Fann Mountains do not need the GBAO permit.
- Going on to the Seven Lakes (Haft Kul), Iskanderkul or Dushanbe? RideTJ runs the Tajik legs — ask us and we book both sides together.
- Exchange money for somoni on the Uzbek side or in Panjakent; rates at the border itself are poor.
Included

- Meet & greet with a name sign at airports and stations, 60 min free waiting after landing

Samarkand → Panjakent: questions
How do I get from Samarkand to Panjakent?
By private car with a handover at the Jartepa border: $90 sedan, $130 minivan, $160 4x4, $240 Sprinter — one price for both cars together, 2–3 hours door to door. The same price applies in the opposite direction, Panjakent → Samarkand.
Does the car cross the border?
No. You walk through both posts with your luggage and a second car waits on the Tajik side — it is faster and avoids vehicle paperwork.
Can we do Panjakent as a day trip from Samarkand?
It is possible but means crossing the border twice in one day. Ask us — we price it after checking the border regime for your date.
