The only way to stand on the shore of what is left of the Aral Sea is a two-day 4x4 trip from Nukus. Day one: about 200 km of paved road to Moynaq and its ship graveyard, then roughly 130–150 km off-road across the dried seabed and the edge of the Ustyurt plateau to a yurt camp near the water. Day two: back the same way. If you have only one day, our Moynaq day trip shows the ship graveyard and the museum — but not the sea itself.

The road
Nukus → Kungrad → Moynaq on asphalt (about 3 hours). From Moynaq the track crosses the former seabed and the Ustyurt escarpment — sand, salt flats and rutted tracks that need a proper 4x4 with high clearance (about 4–5 hours).
Worth stopping
- Moynaq ship graveyard and the Aral Sea museum.
- Ustyurt plateau escarpment viewpoints and the former shoreline.
- Night at a yurt camp near the shore; swimming in the very salty water if the season allows.
Good to know
- The 2-day price ($450 per 4x4, up to 4 people) covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver’s own lodging and meals. Yurt-camp beds and meals for guests are paid separately (we book them for you and tell you the price in advance).
- There is no mobile signal for roughly half the route — send your messages in Moynaq or Kungrad.
- Best months are roughly April to October. After rain or in deep winter the tracks can be impassable; we may reschedule for safety, with a free new date or a full refund.
- Day trip alternative (Nukus → Moynaq → Nukus, about 400 km, 8–9 hours): sedan $120, minivan $170, Sprinter $300.

Not the water itself — it is too far off-road. In one day you can see Moynaq’s ship graveyard and museum; the shore needs two days with a night in a yurt camp.
